Nor'east swells bring many Jersey surfers to the Big Apple.

The early start to our fall has left me feeling a bit like My Cousin Vinny. I grabbed a big slice at Gino’s Pizza in Long Beach. Drank gallons of coffee at Bagel Cafe. Had a few close calls with the wacky City drivers (Where’d you get your driver’s license? A cereal box?! Ehh?) and out of control yellow cabs. On top of that, pigeons everywhere I looked. I was even written an email by the “Washington Krew” telling me how it is, tough guy talk, via E-Mail. And I quote,

“The “Washington Krew” want youse

in Joisy to know we aint happy about

you being so specific about the street in

LB… Better register your cars in NY cause

the Jersey plates really stand out”

Listen Buddy, haven’t you ever heard of proper grammar? I’m not sure if “you’se” is even a real contraction! Aaaay fuhgetaboutit. (see referenced video here: http://vimeo.com/7110342)

All that aside, New York City gets really fun and has a lot of what we don’t here in The Garden State: lefts! Last month I spent the better part of a 3 day weekend either driving to/from NYC, shooting in NYC, or editing photos and video from NYC. Some of which can be seen at SurferMag.com

Get ready for another long weekend in New York, because the winds are looking pretty iffy for New J-e-r-s-e-y. So much better than being skunked in the home state.

Monmouth Beach is a popular surfing spot for many. The heavy equipment and men in hard hats has some surfers worried that yet another break will be ruined by another sand project. In the photo, the backhoe operator is laying the beginnings to a 5 mile long pipeline. The sand will be dredged from the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers in the vicinity of the Rumson-Sea Bright bridge and pumped into the surf at Monmouth Beach.

The Army Corps of Engineers are no strangers to rendering breaks flat. The recent project on Brightton Avenue in Long Branch speaks to this truth. The spot known as “The Pit” is barely starting to break properly again since the undertaking took place at the begining of the year. Even still, the sand has not been right everywhere North of Brighton, so pretty much all of Long Branch. All that extra “replenishment” sand was carried Northward due to the Littoral Current found here in New Jersey. Keeping this in mind, many advocates for our beaches believe this project will follow suit.

Mavericks and the North Shore trumps the Eastern Seaboard and all the waves we have been receiving here on the Right Coast.

Talk to the hand New Yawk City

What about Sam Hammer getting gnarly over the NYC Skyline ? Boom! Shaka-laka! Or maybe you saw Mike Gleason pull into a few drainers? Nope, wrong! Didn’t happen. No Coverage of these guys? Ok how about someone else… hmmm.

You haven't seen Mike the past few weeks, too busy getting barrels.

Clay Pollioni, surly you saw the pictures of him getting PITTED from last week, no? Oh that’s right, I took those pictures. So no, you didn’t see them.

The man behind the curtain.

So until you see yesterday’s sessions plastered all over the place, they can only be found here. And I pay myself for each photo used.

From the start of Hurricane Season through Spring, Jersey’s surfers are amped because now is our time. Donning cold water smocks and clad in 5 millimeter neoprene we face and embrace our season. Pictures from an early start from some Northeast action here in New Jersey. We haven’t even begun to feel the chill.
